Weekend Box Office #73

Not a whole lot that is exciting opening today.

SEMI-PRO (3121 theaters). A bit surprising that this is rated R. Maybe it'll be funny, though it looks like Will Ferrell is just going to the sports well again. $17.8 million.

PENELOPE (1196 theaters). Apparently this has been on the shelf for a couple of years, and Reese Witherspoon's role is barely a cameo. They are advertising it a lot, but it's hard to see it doing all that well. $3.3 million.

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL (1166 theaters). I'd go see Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johannsen read the phone book, but apparently this is rather slow and not that sexy. $4.2 million.

I predict Semi-Pro will do over $30 million.

While I find his stuff to be a little hit-or-miss and a lot over-hyped, Will Ferrell has a die hard following that will easily push him over $20 million, then look for a huge drop off next week. I was pleased with the release of Stranger Than Fiction, but wonder if WF will ever step outside of the box and challenge the audience.

The Other Boleyn Girl is a terrible title. It makes me think this movie is about some girl who was less important than some other girl.

The actual story is kind of cool but the previews have made it look boring as hell.

I HOPE "Semi-pro" does well, and that opens the gates for other sports comedies...

"The Other Boleyn Girl" has GREAT star power. Huge Eric Bana fan, but then again I do have certain bend for all "Erics" in general.
Portman played a queen in the Star Wars prequels, any chance any of her other Star Wars cohorts might show up in this film too? I can almoast hear it now, "Messa so happy to bessa in diss movie." (Wonder if we'll ever see Jar-Jar return to the big screen)

EC - Enough with the crack-smoking up in Bonnie Lake. Also, open the door for other sports comedies? as if they're doing so poorly?

Anyway, only 15.2, about half what it was projected.

Anon - Agree with you. He did quite well in Fiction.

Will Ferrill is so good at being funny that he makes you forget you laughed at the same joke 2 movies ago.

...I wish that was me.

A lot of students are starting Spring Break. I wonder if that had anything to do with Semi-Pro doing so poorly? I can't imagine Will Ferrell's core audience not being interested in this film-- or maybe because it seemed derivative they stayed away (though that logic seems to fly in the face of Hollywood in general).

So what does this mean for Step Brothers?

E.C. -- are you subtly hinting that your first name is indeed Eric? Now we'll be able to track you down way out there in Bonney Lake!

I think it did so (relatively poorly) because it didn't really have a story hook that was apparent in the commercials, just Will Ferrell doing goofy stuff. Plus it's rated R.
