Weekend Box Office #193

A couple of non-thrilling wide openers this weekend:

DESPICABLE ME (3474 theaters). The reviews I've seen say it's a little too sappy to really work well. Figure $21.7 million.

PREDATORS (2669 theaters). Also mixed reviews, and another odd choice from Adrien Brody. Maybe $13.6 million for the weekend.

*******

Last weekend, ECLIPSE made $83.7 million for the 4-day weekend (and $176 million for its first 6 days), while THE LAST AIRBENDER made a surprisingly-strong $51.8 million. Though expect both to drop rapidly.

Despicable Me will definitely win the weekend, but I WILL see Predators. Even if it's only okay I'll still enjoy it. And yeah, I'm curious to see Adrien Brody in such a departure from his normal roles.

"Predators" got bashed in its review by the Seattle Times. STILL after working with dad outside on a couple projects, THEN a couple beers later I think I'm going to go see it.

Rented the movie "The Perfect Getaway" last week. Starting to become a huge Timothy Olyphant fan. I think he plays a the bad guy/crazy guy roles well. Loved him in "Live Free or Die Hard." Anyway, it's good to see Hollywood is still cranking out good talent on one front.

Currently I'm hard at work on a screwball comedy. Been working at it on breaks at work too. Working a swing shift job really helps there -- day shift has too many people on it. ALSO starting work on a new script. A teenage coming-of-age drama -- with motorcycles! Can't wait to show that one to you. Also recently had a vivid dream that MIGHT translate well into sci-fi script. We'll see...

Hope things are going well for you creatively too, Scott. And I hope your summer is progressing nicely. Up here in Washington we had a rare occurance -- the sun made an appearance! We actually had two consecutive days over 90 degrees (before that it was like 30 + days of overcast and rain :(

Hope all is well, Scott. Missing two box office weeks in a row has me a bit worried.
