Weekend Box Office #187

The movie selections continue to be rather uninspiring. This weekend in wide release:

PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME (3646 theaters). The reviews have been okay, but there's just not much real hook here that is going to have people rushing out to see it. Still, it will benefit from the holiday weekend, and the lack of much else. Figure $41.5 for the 4-day weekend.

SEX AND THE CITY 2 (3445 theaters). Oy. I like a lot of women's movies, but you couldn't drag me to see this. Still, it'll do about $45.5 million over the 4 days.

*******

Last weekend, SHREK 4 did $70.8 million, while MAGRUBER completely tanked, doing only $4 million.

"Sex and the City II" is a one quadrant movie. BUT since that quadrant is so seldom represented in the marketplace when a pure, glitzy, celebrating women movie does come out, that one quadrant responds with reckless abandon. Perhaps Cindy Lauper says it best, "Girls just wanna have fun." And "Sex in the City" is that fun that appeals to middle-aged women. Kinda suprised there aren't more "Sex and the City" knock-offs out there.

Scott, I'm with you on the "Prince of Persia. Where's the hook? Looks like a blockbuster wannabe; epic flashes in the trailer, but still in the back of one's mind you find yourself thinking, "There's not much here to get excited about."

Worked liked 26 straight days, then my boss at the new job said that was enough and gave me a 3 weekend. Going to try to get back into the creative writing swing of things this weekend, and pick-up on a new script I was working on before my jobs started eatting up all my time and energy.

Hope all's going well in your world. Got any cool vacations planned this summer?

SATC 2 will do over 52 mil for the 4 day weekend.

POP around 42. Given the cost for POP this is a big disappointment. It will come in third after SATC 2 and Shrek 4.

I agree with E.C. The reviews for SATC 2 were terrible but women went anyway. How many movies have females leads in their 40s and 50s? Hollywood needs to stop ignoring this audience.
