Weekend Box Office #76

Should be a fairly busy weekend at the multiplexes, though I'm not sure I want to see any of these.

DRILLBIT TAYLOR (3056 theaters). The most interesting thing about this movie is that it is co-written by Seth Rogen, which for some reason they aren't putting in the commercials. It's another Judd Apatow production, which is a plus for me, but the commercials really seem geared toward bringing in young boys, and I haven't seen enough that makes me want to rush out and see it. $15.3 million for the weekend.

SHUTTER (2753 theaters). The commercials make it look like it's scary, but they also make it look like all the other Japanese-influenced horror films, while it's PG-13. Still, I think it'll do okay. $16.8 million.

TYLER PERRY'S MEET THE BROWNS (2006 theaters). Tyler Perry is a force to be reckoned with, and I think this will wind up being number one for the weekend. $19.6 million.

"Drillbit Taylor" looks a fun ride. HUGE Owen Wilson fan, and the acting of Judd Apatow's wife is starting to grow on me. Her acting as the drunk girl Andy is trying to take home and sleep with in "40 Year Old Virin" is legendary. Very funny, well written AND great work on her part. And on the promo commericials for "Drillbit" she looks HOT! What a lucky guy that Judd feller is. Hit after hit after hit -- and he's got a hot wife to boot!

Up here in Washington you can't turn the boob tube on and go five minutes without seeing a commerical for "Shutter." BUT it doesn't matter how many times it they show it; you can't hide a weak premise. "Shutter" has the feel of "filler" movie, which will be easily forgotten a couple weeks from now.

Tyler Perry will make a bazillion dollars again.

I kind of want to see Drillbit Taylor because it looks funny and I like Owen Wilson, but I'm not sure it looks good enough to pay theater prices.

Good for Tyler Perry. I love to see someone outside the system mowing down the smug at the box office. So his films aren't high art, big deal.
