Weekend Boxoffice #21
Opening this weekend:
WILD HOGS (3287 screens). The reviews I've seen seem underwhelmed, but it's a comedy, you can't beat the cast, and I think people will turn out in droves. I estimate it'll do $26.7 million for the three-day weekend.
ZODIAC (2362 screens). Apparently its more of a thoughtful character/investigative tale than a serial killer one, though it's supposed to be fairly good. $15.7 million.
BLACK SNAKE MOAN (1252 screens). This seemed like it was going to be a big sleeper hit, but it seems like the backlash is already starting, and reviews haven't been particularly good, while the screen count is really rather low. Still, it should muster up about $9 million.
Thoughts?

My True Crime nut girlfriend is dragging me to Zodiac tonight and I'm dreading it.
2 hours and 40 minutes!!! Ooofa.
Never caught the guy so after an hour of serial killer craziness the story (I fear) will just...sort...of...peter...out. Ooofa, Ooofa.
More of a character study of the writer of the book (which was excellent) than a police procedural! Ooofa, Ooofa, Ooofa.
I know it's gotten good reviews (74 on Metacritic) but they burned me before with Children of Men. Is Metacritic an indicator of consensus or groupthink?
Anyway, even at six hours it'd be more tolerable than Wild Hogs.
Is Samuel L. Jackson through making movies unless the word "snake" is in the title?
Wild Hogs: 21 Million
Zodiac - 13 Million
Black Snake moan - 6.5 Million
Zodiac was incredible in every way. Fincher is a true artist. Wild Hogs, though I did not see it, will be number 1. Which means the intelligence of the American moviegoer loses again.
Here's the estimates:
Wild Hogs - 33-36 million (!)
Zodiac - 11-12 Million
Black snake moan - 4
Those are truly depressing numbers Patrick. Wild Hogs was a jerk off movie and everybody involved knew it. Zodiac was a work of extreme care, and craft, and intellect, and it's not doing much.
Says more about our society then I'd like to know.
Well, I'm sure Wild Hogs will drop like a stone, while hopefully Zodiac will do good word of mouth and hang on for a while.
Hope you're right Scott.
Hope you're right about Zodiac, but I think it'll take a hit next week against 300.
Is Zodiac based on the Neal Stephenson novel?
