Weekend Box Office #46

Slim pickings this weekend; it'sthe dog days of summer. Look for Superbad to triumph, with about $20 million or so for the weekend; maybe I'll go see it again.

New films in wide release:

THE NANNY DIARIES (2629 theaters). Scarlett Johanssen is a cutie, but this is getting pretty bad reviews. Figure it'll make about $9.1 million for the weekend.

WAR (2277 theaters). Not shown to critics. I'm sure there are fans of this kind of stuff, but how many? $6.9 million.

MR. BEAN'S HOLIDAY (1713 theaters). This is also getting bad reviews, and it's the kind of thing that needs a little buzz. $3.0 million.

RESURRECTING THE CHAMP (1605 theaters). This is getting the best reviews of any of these movies, but it's not clear what the hook of the movie is. $3.9 million.

SEPTEMBER DAWN (857 theaters). Anthony Hopkins, in a movie about Mormons massacring settlers. The reviews aren't great. $1.8 million.

I don't fancy Scarlett Johansen at all: she's not ugly, she's just so ORDINARY. Give me Salma Hayek any day.

Scarlett is the Goddess. "Ordinary"? Good Lord I'd take that ordinary. Nothing wrong with Salma. I'd take a little of both.

I'd totally hit that.

If thing go well writing the screenplay I'm working on I might knock off tomorrow afternoon and see "Becoming Jane" in a late matine. If I told that to the guys I work with at the warehouse they'd laugh their ass off -- but I don't care, my need to see SOMEONE, ANYONE fall in love on this Earth superceeds all haters.

My dad would love Jet Li/Stathan in "War," but I'm not my dad.

"Mr. Bean's Holiday?" Only if I'm two sheets to the wind.

Scarlett Johanssen IS the most overrated actress in Hollywood today. NEVER understood all the hoopla over her.

Overrated huh? Well, opinions are like you know what. I think she's a great actress, but more importantly, she is hot.
as for overrated, I'd go with Angelina Jolie. I like her, but she's an average actress.

But you'd hit it, right, E.C.?

Darrell, you're starting to sound like one of those guys you'd see in some sleazy ally who wears a trenchcaot (and nothing else) that my mother warned me about.

I am a fan of movies like WAR... but having seen it, I am not a fan of WAR. It's like the worst written, worst directed version of movies like this. One good plot twist - but completely not set up, so once they do the twist, you want to yell "Fake!" at the screen. No way this twist could be real.

This film also makes a huge mistake - by having stars play hero and villain and giving them equal screen time, you just become confused as to whose side you are on. Do I want Statham to kill Li, or Li to kill Statham? I don't really want either.

But I do want the people who make films like this (Lionsgate) to quit thinking they can just dump a bunch of crappy action scenes on the audience and they'll be satisfied. They need to put as much effort into this kind of film as they put into some film they expect to win an Oscar nomination with.

They keep putting these Jason Statham flicks out at this time of the year, they make a lil' money, then disappear.

He needs to stretch. He's a decent actor. He was great in Snatch.

Superbad is ruling again, which is GREAT news for me (and my raunchy teen script).

As for Scarlett? I'd tax that ass like the government! She is ultra hot, and a decent actress.

Although if I HAD to choose, I'd take an Alba before Scarlett, and probably one Biel, then Scarlett.

Matt, Darrell, Annonymous, Eddie,

My comments were born of a puppy dog's heart: I just love to play and be played with.

Most people in modern day America are WAY to serious about everything. With some people you can't say ANYTHING without them taking it seriously. What I said was in jest.
