Weekend Boxoffice #2

This week let's make it simple.

The Departed is opening, on a little more than 3000 screens.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is opening on a little less than 3000 screens.

Predictions for the first three days, U.S. box office?

My picks:

The Departed $28.7 million
Texas Chainsaw $18.9 million

Hmmm...

Since I got skunked by gambling on the "liger" factor with "School for Scoundrels," I am going to play it safe this week:

The Departed -- 28.6
TCM -- 16.8m

Texas Chainsaw (remake) opened in 3000 theaters and made 28 million in its first weekend before it went on to make over 80 million.

Considering this is a sequel I expect it to do a little better.

I guess Texas Chainsaw 2 will make 32 million its first weekend.

The Departed is not being marketed to appeal to Leo's core audience and Jack's audience doesn't go to theaters so I am going to use Bring Out The Dead as my point of reference. It opened in 2000 theaters and made a little over 6 million.

I guess The Departed will make 10 million its first weekend.

I don't think Bringing Out the Dead works as a very good reference point, because The Departed is getting much better reviews, it's a more entertaining-looking story, and the cast is certainly much more of a lure.

Plus they're advertising the hell out of it.

All this energy being put into handicapping and giving odds to how much box office a movie is going to do over the weekend is disheartening to me.

In the time everyone who posted today spent thinking about this asinine thread, you could have spent half an hour working on your scripts.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: $38 million
The Departed: $23.5 million

Half an hour? Took me about 30 seconds.

You're kind of a douchebag, aren't you Joe?

It's called fun. Have some.

Joe: I do both, it's called Multi-tasking

Departed 24.6
Texas 22.5

Joey,
What else would I be doing? I'm not in the mood to write, geez.

Anyhoo, this is a tricky one. You'd think The Departed would rock considering, but I'm sure you average everyday Jane could care less. So.......

Texas - 22 million
The Departed - 18 million

What about Employee Of The Month? Let's give it 7 million!

Okay, here's how it's playing out as of Sat:

The Departed - 25-26 Million
Texas - 20 million
Employee - 13-15 million

Final totals:
Departed $26.9 million
Chainsaw $18.5 million

Winner is Deep Structure, who guessed $26.7/$17.5. Nice.
