Weekend Boxoffice #35

Starting from this past Monday, Knocked Up has been the #1 movie in the country, passing Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which is fading fast. Expect Knocked Up to beat it this weekend.

It won't be number 1, though, because there are several big movies opening as well:

SURF'S UP (3528 theaters). The reviews are good, and apparently people aren't tired of penguins yet (hard to believe). I don't think it'll do enough adults opening weekend to really hit huge numbers, but the kids will go see it. $48.7 million.

OCEAN'S THIRTEEN (3565 theaters). The word is that it's better than the last one but not as good as the first, but the presence of Al Pacino will help. This will fight Knocked Up and Pirates for second; look for all three to do between $20-$25 million.

HOSTEL PART II (2350 theaters). Movies about pointless brutality never did it for me, yet sadly there is apparently an audience out there for this. $11.8 million.

I'm a HUGE fan of Al Pacino. He has a gravitational force like the sun, which makes me want to see ANYTHING he's in. Unfortunately, "Oceans 12" was SO BAD that not even the Pacino factor can make me forgive and forget. I mean how can you have a cast consisting of: Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, George Cloony, AND Catherine Zeta Jones and end up with a dud like "Oceans 12?" It defies all logic, UNTILL you consider, it all comes back to a little thing we call a story...

Hopefully, this edition of "Oceans" will have one.

I'll say:

Surf's Up - 36 million
Ocean's 12 - 22 million
Knocked Up - 20 million
Pirates - 18 million
Hostel II - 9 million

They made a bad movie with 12. What's the big deal? They tried some interesting angles on the story, it didn't work.

My only prediction is that Ocean's 12 will underperform dramatically, like $10m-ish.

Ocean's 12 was... underwhelming from a story-related point of view because it was based off a screenplay that was intended for a wholly different project and hastily rewritten to accomodate the Ocean's crew. So, in the end, the story didn't make one lick of sense.

Still, it was fun enough, funny enough, and cool enough for me to buy it on DVD. I don't pretend it's good, I just think it's very enjoyable.

In the meantime, more or less everybody involved appologised and promised they won't do it again. And I trust them.

Anyway:

Surf's Up - 30 mill.
Knocked Up - 20-ish.
Pirates - 20-ish.
Ocean's 13 - 15 mill.
Hostel: Part II - 10 mill.

Over at Box Office Mojo, where they have a weekly game in which people guess the box office results, the current average guess is that Ocean's 13 will make $40 million, and Surf's Up will make about $26 million.

Seems skewed to me, but we'll see.

Oceans - 35
Surf's Up - 28
Hostel 2 - 8

And the holdovers:

Knocked Up - 24
Pirates - 22
Shrek 14

Since all the movies I ever want to see do poorly I'm going to go with Oceans taking the bug prize this weekend.

The only thing that interests me about this film is Eddie Izzard. But you know how everybody loves Brad.

13 made 12 look like Million Dollar Baby.

I'm starting to think Knocked Up is my new favorite movie. (Never thought I'd say that.)

Number are coming in. It looks like:

Oceans - 35 (That was my guess)
Surf's Up - 19-20 - Lower than my guess.
Hostel - 8 million (I said 9 - maybe it'll surge on Sunday with horny dudes wager tosee naked chicks drenched in blood).

Knocked Up dropped 38%, not too bad.

Knocked up #1? That was amazing. Great to read that. That was a good recommendation to my military friend.
